Environmental Controls

All the waste gases from the shredding, decoating, melting and holding operations are removed from the plant and treated in a purpose-built emission abatement facility. The plant is currently registered with the Environment Agency under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

The five emission abatement systems (three cold and two hot dust collection systems) represent most of the £7 million investment.

This is how it works:

  • The cold dust filters are used to capture the dust generated by scrap shredding and conveying operations. The hot dust filter system controls the gases from the decoating, melting and holding furnaces.
  • Both hot dust filters are also fitted with lime injection systems which remove acid gases. Lime is always used in excess to ensure efficient reaction.
  • The dry reaction products and other particulates from the five systems are filtered from the exhaust gas using a bag filter.
  • Lime used in the injection system is sent for recycling and is used in the cement industry.
