Novelis Recycling, the world’s leading aluminium can recycler, has recognized the efforts of three inspiring groups in the UK who are working in different ways to encourage the reduction, reuse and recycling of waste.
Novelis operates Europe’s largest dedicated aluminium can recycling facility, located in Warrington, Cheshire. Cans are melted down to produce ingots of recycled metal which are then used in the manufacture of more drink cans, a process that can be repeated infinitely. This ‘closed recycling loop’ saves 95% of the energy required to make aluminium from its raw materials, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions by the same amount.
Novelis is committed to encouraging participation in recycling and is working with various partners to increase acceptance and understanding of the ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ message in the U.K. The company was proud to sponsor and present awards to these groups at ceremonies which took place over the past four months.
In October Novelis sponsored the award for the ‘Best Waste Minimisation or Prevention Project’ at the first LARAC (Local Authority Recycling Advisory Committee) Awards Ceremony. This prestigious event was held in Liverpool and was hosted by former Top Gear presenter Quentin Wilson. The award was presented by Novelis’ National Manager, Andy Doran, to West Sussex Waste Prevention Advisor (volunteers). The winners were praised for ‘encouraging and supporting waste prevention initiatives in West Sussex’.
Later in October the Wales Recycling Awards were presented as part of the Cylch 12th Annual Conference which took place in Cardiff.
The Novelis ‘Community Recycler of the Year Award’ was presented to ‘Kit Out The Kids’ – a social enterprise based in Denbighshire which is involved in the recycling of good quality clothing for children and babies. The team at ‘Kit Out The Kids’ expressed their gratitude to everyone who voted for them saying how encouraging it was to receive this type of recognition for their work.
The REalliance conference was another inaugural event for 2009 and took place in December. The two day event focussed on ‘Revaluing Resources’ and the award for ‘Community Recycling Project of the Year’ was presented by Novelis’ Commercial Manager, Keith Guest to Tendring Reuse and Employment Enterprise (T.R.E.E.).
The judging panel looked at key issues such as innovation, education, social benefit and community input when assessing the entries and were particularly impressed by T.R.E.E.’s common vision to support the community as well as other businesses and charitable organisations. The group said that the prize money would be used for further staff development.
In 2010 Novelis will be sponsoring the ‘Innovation Award’ at the Community Recycling Network for Scotland (CRNS) ‘More Than Recycling’ conference in March. Novelis has a long standing connection with this event which this year will be focussing on ‘Gearing up to be Radical, Resourceful and Resilient in the Third Sector’.
