For four days in June staff from Novelis Latchford left their usual work activities behind and gave up their time to support Science at Work Week at the Catalyst Science Discovery Centre in Widnes.
Novelis Recycling is a long term supporter of the museum which houses exhibits and interactive displays focusing on how science is part of our everyday lives. The interactive Alchemy theatre at the museum shows a specially developed film about Novelis Recycling featuring several members of personnel taking about their job and our business.
The purpose of the annual Science at Work event is to give young people an insight into the possible careers and industries within the science sector that are available to them when they leave school.
The Novelis team showed the children who visited the museum for this special event the process of recycling and reprocessing aluminium cans and talked to them about the types of jobs people do within the plant at Warrington. The children also had the chance to look at (and try on!) the protective clothing that’s needed to carry out many of these roles – giving them a true insight into the reality of working in this kind of environment.
Over the four days more than 700 visitors came through the exhibition including children as young as 11 years old, a group of mature students from the International Business School in Warrington and some children who had travelled all the way from Windermere in the Lake District. The Catalyst team, including new Director Stephen Youd-Thomas, declared the event to have been a huge success saying they had received lots of positive feedback from the teachers and pupils who attended.
Plans are already underway for next year’s event which will hopefully be even bigger and better!
