Novelis supports aluminium can recycling in South Yorkshire

Novelis Recycling has provided equipment to recycling contractor G. A. & M. Schuller & Sons to enable them to expand the service they offer in Doncaster, Sheffield, Rotherham and the surrounding area. The can sorting equipment, funded by revenue from the sale of Packaging Waste Recovery Notes (PRNs), has been provided as part of Novelis’ ongoing support and development of the aluminium can recycling infrastructure in the UK.

G. A. & M. Schuller & Sons were established in 1975 and collect aluminium cans and glass bottles on behalf of local authorities, waste management companies and individuals from a variety of sites including licensed premises, schools, offices and charities. From humble beginnings back in 1975 this family run business has gone from strength to strength and is fully committed to recycling, always looking for ways to improve and expand their service provision.

Aluminium drink cans collected by Schuller will be sent, via the Novelis Aggregation Centre in nearby Mexborough,  to Novelis’ aluminium can recyling plant in Warrington, Cheshire – the only plant in the UK dedicated to this activity. Novelis operates a ‘closed loop’ recycling system which is fed by supplies of quality used aluminium beverage cans, sourced from dealers across the UK. Schuller is one the latest companies to join the existing network of around 400 suppliers sending used aluminium cans to Novelis.

Bob Meath, Business Development Manager for Novelis, said: “We are always looking for companies who can supply us with good quality aluminium cans which meet our specification and we have been impressed by Schuller’s commitment to developing their business to incorporate the collection of aluminium cans in the Doncaster area. Recycling aluminium cans makes sense whichever way you look at it. There is a 95% energy saving when you compare recycling aluminium drink cans to producing aluminium from raw materials and it also greatly reduces the amount of waste going to landfill. Around 5.5 billion drink cans are sold in the UK every year and the Novelis plant has the capacity to recycle every single one.”

“By providing Schuller with a can sorter for their premises in Harworth,” Bob continued, “Novelis is not only assisting the development of the business but also securing supplies of aluminium cans coming into our reprocessing plant.”

David Schuller from G. A. and M. Schuller commented “As a company we started off collecting and recycling glass but have always been keen to expand into collecting and processing other recyclable material. The equipment which Novelis has given us means that we are now able to offer a collection service for used aluminium cans. We provide dedicated bins to our customers in which they can dispose of the used cans, we then use the can sorter to treat the cans and make sure that what we send to Novelis for reprocessing is of the best quality.”

“We have really appreciated the support from Bob Meath and the team at Novelis and we are looking forward to working with them.”
