NOVELIS PRESENTS GLASGOW CITY COUNCIL WITH QUALITY AWARD
The Recycling Team at Glasgow City Council has received an award from Novelis Recycling in recognition of the quality of used aluminium beverage cans supplied for recycling
30th June, 2009: Glasgow residents can be confident that their recycling efforts are not going to waste after the recycling team at the City Council received an award from Novelis, the company that reprocesses the aluminium drink cans collected in the City's kerbside recycling service.
Novelis is the world's leading recycler of used aluminium drink cans and the company has presented Glasgow City Council with the Certificate of Excellence in recognition of the quality of cans supplied for recycling. Novelis is keen to recognise and reward the efforts of suppliers who achieve good can quality because the presence of contaminants such as glass, steel, paper or plastic can disrupt the efficiency of the aluminium recycling process, and pose a safety risk in the recycling plant.
Glasgow City Council provides a recycling service to 200,000 households collectingi paper, plastic and mixed (aluminium and steel) food and drink cans. The materials are spearated at the materials recycling facility (MRF) at Polmadie before being sent for reprocessing. In 2008 over 74 tonnes (approx. 4.8 million) of cans were sent for reprocessing to the Novelis used beverage can recycling plant in Warrington, Cheshire.
Presenting the Quality Award, Novelis Recycling Business Development Executive Bob Meath said: It is a great pleasure to present this award in recognition of the hard work that the recycling team at Glasgow City Counicl consistently puts into ensuring that the aluminium cans they suply for recycling reach us in good condition. By supplying Novelis with quality aluminium cans they are maintaining the closed recycling loop and this means that in around 60 days the drink cans recycled in Glasgow can be back on sale as new cans."
Glasgow City Council Executive Member Baillie James McNally said: "The award is testament to the efforts of everyone in the team at Polmadie. They work extremely hard and deserve this recognition for their dedication to ensuring that we provide the highest standard of material to our customers."
