NOVELIS PRESENTS FLINTSHIRE COUNTY COUNCIL WITH QUALITY AWARD
Novelis has presented Flintshire County Council with a Certificate of Excellence in recognition of the high quality of used aluminium beverage cans it supplies to the company for recycling.
Novelis Recycling is keen to recognize and reward the efforts of suppliers who achieve a consistently high level of aluminium can quality. The presence of contaminants such as glass, steel, paper or plastic disrupt the aluminium recycling process, and pose a health and safety risk, so Novelis works closely with its suppliers, providing expert advice and assistance to ensure contamination is minimised.
Flintshire County Council’s recycling service includes bring sites and a kerbside collection for 60,000 households. Dry recyclables are separated into material streams at the kerbside and taken to a bulking depot, where metals are sorted into steel and aluminium fractions using magnetic and eddy current separators.
From Flintshire, the aluminium cans are sent to Novelis’ dedicated recycling plant in Warrington, Cheshire, where they are melted down and turned into ingots of metal which are used in the manufacture of new drink cans, a process that can be repeated infinitely. This ‘closed recycling loop’ saves 95% of the energy required to make aluminium from its raw materials, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions by the same amount.
Presenting the quality award, Novelis Recycling Business Development Executive Bob Meath said: “It is a great pleasure to present this award in recognition of the hard work and great effort of all the staff and recycling public of Flintshire. By supplying aluminium cans into our system they are ensuring that the closed recycling loop is maintained – this means that in around 60 days the cans they recycle can be back on sale as new cans.”
Accepting the Award, Councillor Kevin Jones, Executive Member for Waste Management Strategy & Corporate Assets, said: “I am delighted to accept this award in recognition for the quality of our work. It is a well-deserved pat on the back for a great team and their efforts to make our recycling service as effective as possible.”
