NOVELIS PRESENTS QUALITY AWARD TO ABITIBIBOWATER RECYCLING EUROPE

AbitibiBowater Recycling Europe has received a Certificate of Excellence from Novelis Recycling in recognition of the improved quality of aluminium Used Beverage Cans (UBCs) supplied by the company for recycling.

Waste management company Ward Recycling handles recycling collections in Hartlepool, Middlesbrough and Redcar and Cleveland on behalf of AbitibiBowater Recycling Europe. Used aluminium cans are collected, along with other recyclable materials, and processed at its Middlesbrough site prior to despatch to Novelis for reprocessing.

The Certificate of Excellence is a quality award presented by Novelis Recycling to its suppliers to mark improvements in used aluminium can quality. The presence of contaminants such as glass, steel, paper or plastic disrupt the aluminium recycling process, and pose a health and safety risk, so Novelis works closely with its suppliers providing expert advice and assistance to ensure contamination is minimised.

At the Novelis plant, the aluminium cans are melted down and turned into ingots of metal which are used in the manufacture of more drink cans, a process that can be repeated infinitely. This ?closed recycling loop? saves 95% of the energy required to make aluminium from its raw materials, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions by the same amount. Additionally, saving aluminium cans for recycling reduces pressure on local landfill sites used for waste disposal.

Presenting the Award, Novelis Recycling Business Development Executive Bob Meath said: ?It is a great pleasure to present this quality award to this AbitibiBowater Recycling scheme, they have demonstrated their commitment to achieving consistently good quality aluminium cans. By supplying cans into our closed loop supply chain they are ensuring that the aluminium can recycling loop is maintained ? this means that in around 60 days used cans are back on the shop shelves as new cans.?

Accepting the Award Norman Bowsted Site Manager for Ward Recycling paid tribute to his team ?We are delighted to receive this award in recognition for the quality of our work. It is a pat on the back for a great team and their efforts. We have a great team that is flexible and adaptable to the challenges we face in the industry.?
