South East Northumberland Recycling (SENREC) has been awarded a Certificate of Excellence by Novelis Recycling in recognition of the improved quality of aluminium used beverage cans (UBCs) it supplies for recycling.
SENREC operates a recycling centre in West Sleekburn, near Bedlington, where co-mingled dry recyclables from the kerbside collection schemes operated by Blyth Valley District Council and Wansbeck District Council (63,500 households in total) are sorted.
The presence of contaminants such as glass, steel, paper or plastic can seriously disrupt the recycling process and also pose a health and safety risk. At SENREC, contamination by other materials has been eliminated by improving staff training and introducing housekeeping practices which include regular equipment checks and quality monitoring, with staff encouraged to take a proactive role in this area of the operation.
Cans are stored loose in outdoor bays prior to final sorting and baling, making it prone to contamination from wind-blown materials ? in particular plastics and paper. The handling, sorting and quality monitoring systems that SENREC has introduced ensure these contaminants are removed, so the aluminium UBCs meet the Novelis specification.
Presenting the Award, Novelis Recycling Business Development Executive Bob Meath said: ?It is a great pleasure to present this award to SENREC. They have demonstrated a real commitment to achieving good quality aluminium cans. As well as receiving the best price for their material, they are keeping the aluminium can recycling ?loop? going ? cans recycled through Novelis can be back on the shelves as new drink cans in around 60 days. SENREC and the two local councils are a fine example of organizations working together ? it?s a great job well done by all!?
SENREC site manager Fred Audsley paid tribute to the team effort that earned the company the Novelis Recycling Quality Award and to its local authority partners who collect the material. ?Material quality starts with the householder but depends on the efforts of the collection teams at the kerbside. Without the commitment of the two local authority collection teams, ensuring that the correct materials are collected for recycling our job would be a lot harder. As it is, I am very proud of our team here and feel that every one of them has made a contribution towards us receiving this award.?
