ROCHDALE METAL LTD. JOINS THE NOVELIS RECYCLING NETWORK

Rochdale Metal Ltd. has joined forces with the world?s leading aluminium recycling company, Novelis, to enable local people to recycle used drink cans for cash.

The Robinson Street -based company has become the latest addition to the Novelis Recycling network of ?Think Cans, Think Cash? recycling centres.

Novelis operates Europe?s only dedicated aluminium can recycling plant in Warrington, Cheshire, where used cans are recycled into ingots used in the manufacture of new cans. The company is working closely with local suppliers to develop the country?s can collection infrastructure. These range from local authorities running kerbside collection programmes to waste management companies, scrap metal merchants and community programmes.

As a ?Think Cans? centre, Rochdale Metals operates a buy-back service where members of the public can exchange their empty aluminium drink cans for cash. Each kilogramme of cans recycled (approx. 65 cans) is worth 75p* at current prices. The service is popular with individuals, schools and charities, which use ?cash for cans? as a way of raising funds.

In addition, every customer who cashes in their empty aluminium drink cans at a Novelis ?Think Cans? centre is eligible to receive reward points based on the weight of their cans. These points are then exchanged for prizes. Collectors recycling 200 kilos are then entered into a free prize draw. One recent winner was a local collector scooping the top prize of a DAB digital radio.

Five billion aluminium cans are sold every year in the U.K. They are 100% recyclable, making them a valuable source of metal. If all five billion were recycled through ?cash for cans? they would be worth over ?30 million to collectors, schools, charities and voluntary organisations.

Rochdale Metal Ltd?s managing director Anthony Foster comments: ?Cash for Cans enables local people to benefit directly from recycling, and I?m pleased to be able to provide this service. I hope that working with the world?s leading aluminium recycler will be a valuable experience for my business.?

Novelis Recycling?s Business Development Executive Robbie Davies adds: ?Recycling aluminium cans saves 95% of the energy required to produce aluminium from raw materials, and reduces litter and pressure on local landfill sites - so it?s good news all round. We will be working closely with Rochdale Metals to make this new service a success.?
