Aluminium rolling and recycling company Novelis has provided a local business with sorting equipment to assist in the recovery of aluminium cans from the Birkenhead area.
Allcans is a social enterprise that has been in operation in the Beechwood area of Birkenhead for the past 12 months. Novelis has provided equipment to process the cans from the kerbside collection on the estate, which includes 1,500 households. Allcans also collects from local pubs, clubs, hospitals and workplaces. The scheme is so successful it is about to employ more staff, creating new jobs for two people from the local community.
Any profits from the scheme will be invested in the local youth football team, Future Stars. John Vaughn, founder and Managing Director for Allcans is not only the chairman but also the team coach. John comments: 'If we hadn't received this sorting equipment I wouldn't be at the stage of hiring two more people and developing the recycling service in this area.'
