Novelis Recycling boost to kerbside recycling in Yorkshire

Aluminium reprocessor Novelis Recycling has provided a new eddy current sorter to assist in the recovery of aluminium cans from kerbside collections run by Yorwaste Recycling of North Yorkshire.

Aluminium reprocessor Novelis Recycling has provided a new eddy current sorter to assist in the recovery of aluminium cans from kerbside collections run by Yorwaste Recycling of North Yorkshire.

The equipment, funded by PRN revenue, has been provided as part of Novelis Recycling's ongoing support for aluminium packaging recycling programmes across the UK.

The new equipment has been installed at Yorwaste's Materials Recycling Facility at Hessay, near York. The site sorts recyclable materials collected from nearly 100,000 households covered by the City of York and Harrogate councils.

Yorwaste recovers over 80 tonnes of empty aluminium drink cans every year from kerbside recycling activities in the York and North Yorkshire area. This is then transported to the Novelis Used Beverage Can Recycling Plant in Warrington for reprocessing.

Yorwaste Recycling and External Affairs Manager, John Miller says: 'This new equipment will help us immensely. The sorter will ensure that the growing volume of aluminium cans we are collecting are efficiently extracted, are not contaminated and meet the Novelis quality specifications.'

The investment in can processing equipment is part of Novelis Recycling's continuing support for the UK?s developing aluminium can collection infrastructure.

Commercial Manager, Keith Guest adds: 'Novelis Recycling is committed to maximising recovery of valuable aluminium packaging from kerbside schemes. This support is an example of our ongoing investment in the infrastructure which also includes marketing support programmes in additional to on-going advice and guidance provided by our field-based team.'
