Firbank Chiltern has been awarded a Certificate of Excellence by Novelis Recycling in recognition of the consistently high quality of aluminium Used Beverage Cans (UBCs) supplied by the company for recycling.
The Certificate of Excellence is a quality award presented by Novelis Recycling to its suppliers to mark improvements in used aluminium can quality.
The presence of contaminants such as glass, steel, paper or plastic can disrupt the aluminium recycling process, and also pose a health and safety risk. The award to Firbank Chiltern follows an investment in new can processing equipment, including ?1/2 million on state-of-the-art baling machinery, which has contributed towards the elimination of these contaminants.
Part of the Dunstable Waste Group Ltd (DWG Ltd), Firbank Chiltern processes cans collected by local authority recycling programmes, in Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire. As well as being one of Novelis's direct suppliers the company is part of the Novelis Recycling network, acting as the south eastern aggregation centre.
As an aggregation centre, Firbank Chiltern provides a delivery point for Novelis Recycling's many suppliers and in turn, ensures that material delivered meets the high quality required for the smooth running of the recycling process.
Sales & Marketing Director of Firbank Chiltern, Robert Firbank, explains: 'We are pleased to be recognised by Novelis with this award. It is down to the efforts of the team lead by Group General Manager, Ian Dann, and rewards our investment in new technology, which has enabled us to refine the can processing procedure and given our material a quality edge.'
Novelis Recycling Business Development Manager Terry Marks, adds: 'DWG are a long-standing supplier to Novelis and play a vital role in the aluminium can recycling system in the South East, so making this award to them is a real pleasure. Contamination is one of the major issues facing the recycling industry at the moment, and the investment in new equipment has made a major contribution to preventing this.'
