Christmas will go with a 'pop' for a group of aluminium can recyclers from Newcastle who came out winners in a promotion run by Alcan Aluminium Can Recycling. Customers at 40 'cash for cans' centres around the UK took part in the competition to win a year's supply of canned drinks, and the fridge to store them in.
Overall winners were Ponteland Care, a residential centre for adults with learning difficulties based in Ponteland, Newcastle upon Tyne. The centre has been recycling aluminium drink cans for cash for five years, with funds raised going towards providing items for the residents. Ten other customers from around the UK won regional prizes of luxury picnic backpacks.
Alcan part-funds its marketing support for cash for cans from PRN revenue. The company currently provides marketing programmes for 40 independent businesses offering cash for cans services around the UK. The services are provided by 14 dealers operating as Alcan-branded buy back centres as well as smaller, unbranded secondary metal merchants and community recycling operations. Aluminium can recycling services provided include workplace collections, mobile can vans and buy back centres offering cash for cans up to six days a week.
