AACR takes a tough line on contamination in ubc deliveries

Alcan Aluminium Can Recycling has issued an urgent quality warning to its suppliers after an increase in the number of deliveries that are failing to meet the company's specification.

Alcan Aluminium Can Recycling has issued an urgent quality warning to its suppliers after an increase in the number of deliveries that are failing to meet the company's specification.

Bales broken open at random have been found to contain a range of contaminants that posed potential risks, both the Health & Safety and to the UBC recycling process.

Contaminants found at the recycling plant have included plastic, steel food cans, glass, whole aerosol cans and household rubbish. One bale contained half-full cans of wood stain, which could have caused a massive explosion had they been charged to the furnace.

The Company has contacted all suppliers to highlight the problem and has instructed its network of regional aggregation centres to tighten quality inspections and undertake random checks on deliveries.

AACR National Manager Rick Hindley says: "We have to take the issue of contamination very seriously. The can sheet ingot Alcan produces has to meet very specific quality stanards, and so we in turn are dependent on the quality of material supplied to us. Contaminants cause down-time in the plant and increase costs. Utlimately the price we are able to pay our suppliers will be affected if this situation does not improve."

Suppliers failing to adhere to the company's specification risk loads being rejected, and AACR reserves the right to reject deliveries retrospectively.

Full details of the specification are available on this website .
